Tools Commonly Used in Educational Settings

Learning management system (LMS) enhancements. Canvas, Blackboard, and other LMS platforms now have AI add-ons for grading support, progress tracking, and communication. These are often the lowest-friction entry point because they layer onto existing infrastructure.

AI tutoring assistants. Tools like Khanmigo (Khan Academy’s AI tutor) and similar products give students a Socratic-style resource that answers questions without just giving answers. They work well for students who are stuck on a concept at 10pm when no instructor is available.

Automated assessment tools. AI can score short-answer and essay responses with rubric alignment, flag responses for human review when edge cases arise, and give students faster feedback than a manual grading cycle allows. These tools work best as a first pass, not a final decision.

Communication and admin tools. Tools built on large language models can draft parent updates, generate personalized progress summaries, and handle FAQ responses for common student questions. These save time without replacing the relationship.

What to Watch For in Education AI Implementations

Accuracy matters more in education than in most industries. An AI grading tool that misscores 5% of responses is a problem that undermines trust in the entire system. Before deploying any AI for assessment, run it against a known dataset and compare outcomes with experienced instructors.

Data privacy requirements are strict. FERPA governs student data in the US. Any AI tool handling student records, grades, or communication logs must be evaluated for compliance before deployment. Vendor claims about compliance are not sufficient. Review the data processing agreement.

Don’t automate relationships. The evidence is consistent that students who feel connected to a person in the institution are far more likely to complete their programs. AI should handle transactions (answering administrative questions, sending reminders, generating reports) so humans can focus on relationships. Any implementation that replaces personal contact with automated messages has things backwards.

Pilot before scaling. A single cohort or course section is enough to gather real performance data. Scale after you have evidence, not before.
